The Designer: Tetsu Nishiyama
In 1993, designer Tetsu Nishiyama co-founded FORTY PERCENT AGAINST RIGHTS together with SKATE THING, the current designer of C.E. The following year, alongside Shinsuke Takizawa, he launched NEIGHBORHOOD. After FORTY PERCENT AGAINST RIGHTS went on hiatus, WTAPS was launched in 1996.
In 2015, he went on to start DESCENDANT, a brand built around the idea of "craftsmanship passed from parent to child, and from that child to the next generation." For more than three decades, Nishiyama has remained a driving force in Japan's streetwear scene, and one of the key figures who helped bring 1990s Ura-Harajuku culture to global attention.
The Design Philosophy of WTAPS
Under the theme "Placing things where they should be," WTAPS continues to create the clothes its creators genuinely want to wear.
Rooted in military garments, the brand's signature lies in updating classic silhouettes and details with an urban sensibility. With strong roots in music, skateboarding, and motorcycle culture, WTAPS strikes a refined balance that lets it settle naturally into everyday city life — a balance that has earned it a following among celebrities, dedicated streetwear collectors, and those with a minimalist sensibility.
With that in mind, here is a look at some of WTAPS' signature pieces and notable models from recent years.
"SIGN SWEATER COTTON"
A sweatshirt the brand continues to release season after season, refining its details each time. Deceptively simple in appearance, it is cut from dense, heavyweight cotton that develops a vintage-like character over time through repeated washing. In recent seasons, an oversized, easy-to-wear silhouette has taken center stage, giving the piece exceptional versatility. The attention paid even to yarn thickness and fabric density speaks to WTAPS' refusal to compromise — even on what might be considered a "basic" item.
The JUNGLE Series
"JUNGLE 01 LS COTTON.TWILL.CAMO"
A shirt-jacket in leopard print from the JUNGLE series — a signature line that has been part of the brand since its earliest days. Based on the military jungle fatigue jacket, its pockets are reworked with vertically oriented flaps for a more contemporary look. Constructed from a highly durable cotton ripstop fabric and finished with an insignia patch, it is a piece
"JUNGLE 01 LS COTTON.OXFORD.TEXTILE"
This model incorporates the crossbone motif, an icon dating back to the brand's earliest days. Rendered in cotton oxford, it offers just the right degree of structure and breathability, making it well suited to everyday wear. Part of the appeal of a long-running staple like this lies in tracing the subtle variations in specification from one season to the next.
The Team Jacket
"TEAM JACKET NYLON TWILL"
The final piece is the "TEAM JACKET NYLON TWILL," released with the launch of the Spring/Summer collection. Made from a substantial nylon twill with a soft sheen, its silhouette draws from the classic varsity jacket. While offering a light, easy feel, it is quilted with insulation for added warmth — layered in winter or worn over a T-shirt in spring and autumn, it is designed for versatile, long-season wear.
Look closely at the lining stitching and you'll notice it forms the shape of a "W" — a small, playful detail within an otherwise understated design. Its appeal has extended beyond dedicated WTAPS enthusiasts, with notable figures also seen wearing the brand.
The Essence of WTAPS
WTAPS has produced many highly regarded pieces, from its earliest releases to the present day, with a number of them becoming regarded as classics. As a result, its designs rarely feel dated, and earlier pieces continue to retain their appeal among collectors and enthusiasts.
